First, let me say, Emily May (also writes as Emily Larkin) deserves to be far more widely read. If you love to read well-researched, well-written stories of this kind, do yourself a favor and try this one. Or any of her titles. The author's fluent writing style, her command of the period's details, her crisp and very convincing character portrayals and the interesting situations her heroines face make them great reads. I wish it didn't have a number of similar plot points as other stories of hers I've read, with a scarred war hero, here Major Nicholas Reynolds, seeking to unmask the identity of the heroine, a female who has crossed him. As with The Spinster's Secret, the heroine, Lady Isabella Knox, has a compelling reason to hide her identity but here she has the strength of character to want nevertheless to undo the harm she's done inadvertently to the jilted Major at the same time.

By chance, Lady Isabella's rescued a runaway girl of good breeding who has defied her rigid grandfather, the Colonel, and fled rather than marry the Major, to whom she was affianced out of the schoolroom. In the meantime, a slip of Lady Isabella's tongue at a ball brands the Major 'an ogre' and his horrific scar serves as a focal point for missish girls and matron's disapprobation. He is not just humiliated, his hopes to marry anyone, much less a quiet, biddable young lady of quality, are quashed by this cruel epithet, but he doesn't know who started it. He's furious and stymied until Lady Isabella advises him to face down his snickering detractors and join her in a harmless but meaningful flirtation. As a beauty and a duke's eldest daughter who has spurned all suitors to date, she means to resuscitate his prospects in the Marriage Mart by setting the example and letting him be seen as a desirable partner to one of Society's most desirable and elusive women. And it's working...

But he's determined to find his former fiancee' benefactress and open a can of Regency-era whoop-ass on the interfering female. So, Lady Isabella has to walk a fine line, fearing all the while she allows him to escort her around Town, that he will discover her perfidy. And he is a seriously dangerous, very annoyed man on a mission to revenge himself for his humiliation.

I was on the edge of my seat reading and waiting for the Major to find out who's who and see what happens next. I really enjoyed this and highly recommend this.

Beauty and the Scarred Hero Emily May 9780373305865 Books Reviews

It was all going well, and then the "OBSTACLE". Really it was a lovely story, good romance, but just one issue with it. As a man of honor, our hero agrees to renew the engagement with the secondary character, Harriet, when she demands/begs him to. Ok, a man of honor would do that...hence the "OBSTACLE"......but......surely the sex with the heroine, taking her virginity and asking her to marry him, would trump the previous engagement to the ninny who had jilted him? Surely his honor would demand he marry the woman who's virginity he took? Let alone his inclination. So as a plot idea, it failed for me! Annoyed me actually. Especially when our heroine just meekly accepted it. Pffft! Should have slapped Harriet, and thumped him....... ;)
Beauty Isabella is a normal person and an animal rescuer (close to my heart). Men don't fawn all over her because of her looks and she just never worries about what someone thinks of her. That she in all of her kind heartedness actually got annoyed with young Harriet's constant weeping gave her even more appeal. She is very likeable. Nicholas begins by looking something of a jerk, still he comes of as sexy and handsome. He wants a young wife that he can shape into the kind of spouse he wants. But his young choice thinks he is a scary ogre and runs off. When these two get together, it's all about how they grow to like each other and then fall in love. I liked how the author showed Nicholas growing and changing. The ending conflict is a bit lackluster and kind of stupid really. The secondary characters are not intrusive. All in all, these people are likeable and the story enjoyable.
The sweetest heroine I can remember having read about in a long time, makes one mistake. Or rather two, because she also lies to the hero about being the one accidentially calling him an ogre.

He, on the other hand, wants a very young wife he can mold and I didn't think that detail spoke well of him. He does come around and realizes that what he feels is not lust, but love.

A nice story.
Warning...mild spoilers....A beautiful story on the Beauty and the Beast theme, which I love. The characters were very strong and appealing. Nicolas was a wonderful hero, having been scarred in battle and Isabella was the perfect fit for him. Their chemistry was palpable and grew stronger over time into a mature love that was very believable. I loved that the characters were a bit older than the typical historical romance. However, the problem they encountered toward the end was not in keeping with the honorable man that Nicholas was portrayed as up until that point. For him to disregard what happened between he and Isabella and supposedly do his duty to Harriet was appalling. I totally admired him him up until that point. As a soldier of war, he should have fought for Isabella and not let anything stand in his way. Except for that, I thought the book was wonderful.
A very young, immature, frightened girl runs away from a marriage arraigned by her Grandfather to a terrible old scary and scarred military man. Lady Isabella rescues her and is shocked to find at a ball that her sister in law is related to this terrible Ogre! In fact she's introduced to him a few minutes later. He's her age, commanding, very fit, and would be handsome except for a scar on his face. In the meantime the ton is laughing at the Ogre abandoned by his betrothed. Lady Isabella to the rescue again. Lovely Regency Romance with unexpected twists and turns. Highly recommended.
