The Chalet School and Jo Elinor M BrentDyer 9780006903444 Books

I read the abridged version of this book first, and was thoroughly charmed by the adventures of Joey and her sister as they begin a boarding school in the Alps. I love that you not only get the antics of a group of girls and the young women starting the school, but the adventure of travelling to a new country, and learning new languages and ways.

The language flows beautifully, but is complex enough that I'd recommend it for ages 9 and up. I struggled a bit with it when I was nine, but gradually my reading ability caught up as I reread the books. They are complex and fun enough that I read them as an adult, for comfort reading.

This book is unfortunately unabridged, but the abridgements are not noticeable to the reader if you don't know what you are missing, though they are frequent enough to warrant an unabridged copy (Girls Gone By Press has recently republished an unabridged edition) if you are a big fan.

But this is absolutely an amazing book, and not to be missed on any account, even if you just get the abridged one. Truly a great start to the series and fine as a stand alone as well.

The Chalet School and Jo Elinor M BrentDyer 9780006903444 Books Reviews

I grew up on a steady diet of the Chalet school series - now I want my daughter to do the same. This book is one of a series - like M&M'S - once you eat one, you have to devour all.
With this book, we take our first steps into the world of the Chalet School - a series that eventually covered almost 30 years of the life of Jo Bettany.
In this book, you will find why Madge started the School, and the difficulties Jo has with settling down to life in a school environment.
Enrol in the Chalet School, and discover a forgotten world.
They said you had to be ages 4-8 to enjoy this book. In some ways I disagree. It is so old and involves such a different culture that really, a ten year old would find it "topping". This is the first in a series of many and it starts out pretty slow. My suggestion is too skim the first few pages unless you are completely interested in taking a tour of certain parts of Europe. Pretty soon, the story picks up and you can't help but love Joey though there really aren't any main characters. Some interesting and somewhat unpredictible things happen that are totally irrevolent. The main idea of the story is that this English girl decides to start a school in the Tiernees Mountains. Slowly the school poputlation grows and the usual amount of unusual accurences accur. It's a pretty good read, even if you are older than eight!
The chronicle of Jo's last year as a Chalet School girl. We experience with Jo what everybody feels at that certain stage in life the reluctance to grow up and leave behind a carefree childhood and to emerge from it as a responsible adult.
Jo's last year and she is made head girl, is given the responsibilities that she loathes and really has to pull up and leave behind childish antics. There are difficulties all around with Robin's illness and the middles worse than ever and all this calls for a responsible Jo who can take command of all the varied difficult situations that the term holds for her, Jo really has to grow up.
I loved this book because I could relate to it and sometimes I could see myself in Jo's place facing the "change" that at first seems so horrid yet is the mysterious doorway to the second stage of our lives.
A Gorgeous edition and a must read for all those who don't want to grow up.
The first in a long-running popular series of stories centered on an English girls school in the Alps. Plenty of drama and fun characters to keep modern young readers interested, I think, with a Nancy Drew-like feel. 1001 Children’s Books You Must Read.
